Record crowd to watch Steel

- BY STEVE HEPBURN

WITH just one day to go to its biggest game of the year, the Southern Steel is quietly going about its work.

But it will know what sort of game it is in for tomorrow night, playing in front of its biggest crowd at Stadium Southland.

The Steel is set to take on the Central Pulse in the final of the ANZ Premiership in Invercargill tomorrow night.

After going through the whole season unbeaten, the southern franchise is aiming to put the icing on the cake of a successful season with a win.

The Steel will play in front of a crowd which will number just under 3000, the largest crowd the Steel has played in front of at the stadium.

A temporary stand has been erected at one end of the court, taking up room usually reserved for corporate hospitality.

Fewer than 200 tickets were left unsold yesterday afternoon and netball bosses were confident the match would be sold out.

The Steel spent yesterday just going through some training and working on combinations.

The side will have a light training today, in between promotional commitments for the grand final.

Whatever happens tomorrow night, the Steel will not have much time to soak up the result.

The top three sides in the ANZ Premiership will head to Nelson over the weekend to play in the new Netball Super Club competition.

Along with the three New Zealand sides, also lining up are the Gauteng Jaguars, from South Africa, New South Wales Institute of Sport, Fijian side Marama Vou, the University of Trinidad and Tobago and the Celtic Flames, from Wales.

The tournament will run from July 2 to July 7.
