Side entrance for gallery

A redeveloped Forrester Gallery will not have a main entrance on Thames St.

Waitaki District councillors voted on Wednesday in favour of ‘‘compromise’’ — a side entrance — after concerns were raised about access to the building from its current entrance on Thames St or the rear of the building in Humber St, where parking would be situated.

Council community services group manager Dr Thunes Cloete noted that in early discussions of the $6 million redevelopment, ‘‘a lot of councillors’’ had wanted a Thames St entrance, but the 1882 Heritage New Zealand category 1registered site had not been designed for use as a gallery, museum and archive.

‘‘The building was built as a bank. The purpose of it wasn’t getting a lot of people through it.’’

Cr Guy Percival voted against the change.
