Gates to stay closed

Otago Daily Times - - Regions -

The gates allowing public access to the Oamaru breakwater area will remain closed permanently.

Waitaki District councillors on Wednesday voted unanimously to lock the gates during hours of darkness.

Last year, after public pressure, the gates were left unlocked to ensure public access, but large crowds of tourists gathering on the breakwater at night to watch penguins coming ashore at the Oamaru Blue Penguin Colony prompted the council to trial a closure last month, citing health and safety concerns. Mayor Gary Kircher said the council would continue to monitor the number of people accessing the breakwater after dark. ‘‘If it requires enforcement . . . we will have to look at that.’’
