Fountain to be restored

Oamaru’s 105yearold Craig Fountain will be restored at the Oamaru Public Gardens after Waitaki district councillors approved a $90,000 increase to the project’s budget on Wednesday.

Waitaki Mayor Gary Kircher said recent publicity about the rising costs of the now $165,000 project showed ‘‘a lot of support’’ for the fountain’s refurbishment.

Cr Hugh Perkins, who last month raised the issue of a replacement rather than a refurbished fountain, led a failed bid to have the matter deferred to the next council meeting to ‘‘look at a couple of fully costed options’’.

He asked for the council to consider a modern design. ‘‘When you open up playing with water and light there are 101 alternatives,’’ he said.

Mr Kircher said he was open to the idea of a ‘‘modern art fountain’’ but said there were other locations where it would be more suitable. Cr Craig Dawson voted against the increased project budget.
