Steampunk economic benefit study reshaped
A STUDY to uncover the economic benefits of the Steampunk movement to Oamaru is being reshaped.
In June, Waitaki Mayor Gary Kircher talked about creating an economic benefits study with the help of University of Otago students.
With the arrivel of new Waitaki District Council chief executive Fergus Power, the study plan had changed, Mr Kircher said.
Any economic benefit study that would happen would cover other tourism events.
The idea of the study would be to help the council, Tourism Waitaki and other groups make decisions ‘‘in that space’’, Mr Kircher said.
‘‘We could be doing more.’’
Other events and sites that could be covered included Duntroon’s geology and fossilbased Vanished World and the Alps to Ocean cycle trail.
Having a level of data at hand would be helpful.
He said discussions so far were leaning towards the possibility of an intern being brought into the council to create the study.
