Tourists sur­vive crash

Kaik­oura: Tourists in a van that plunged 8m into a dry riverbed are said to be lucky to be alive.

Stuff has re­ported that a van went off a bridge on the In­land Kaik­oura Rd about 9.45am yes­ter­day.

Kaik­oura Fire Brigade chief fire of­fi­cer Ian Walker told Stuff a van ‘‘car­ry­ing six tourists went through the bridge rails and fell ap­prox­i­mately 8m to the riverbed’’.

Two peo­ple were ad­mit­ted to hospi­tal with mod­er­ate in­juries af­ter the crash, while the rest of the pas­sen­gers re­mained rel­a­tively un­scathed.

‘‘They’re just very, very lucky peo­ple,’’ Mr Walker said.
