Maori seat supported
Auckland: Auckland councillors have voted in principle to establish a Maori seat for the city’s next election.
But they say a law restricting the number of members on the council’s governing body needs to be changed first to make room.
Currently, the council has 20 positions and can establish a separate Maori ward, but it legally cannot expand the total number of wards.
With the council unwilling to reduce the number of general wards to 19, a Maori seat will now be contingent on the Government changing the law governing the council’s size.
