A 27YEAROLD Dunedin woman was airlifted to Dunedin Hospital with serious injuries after a singlevehicle crash on State Highway 1 north of Oamaru yesterday.

Emergency services, including two fire appliances from Glenavy and Oamaru and two ambulances from Waimate, attended the scene just south of the Waitaki Bridge about 10.15am.

Acting Sergeant Paul Alden, of Oamaru, said early indications were the southbound vehicle with two occupants drifted off the road into a ditch before it came to rest against a power pole.

No other vehicles were involved.

The woman was freed from the vehicle by firefighters using the jaws of life and was in a stable condition before she was transferred to Dunedin Hospital, Acting Sgt Alden said.

The nature of her injuries was not known.

The second occupant, a man from Dunedin believed to be in his late 20s, was not injured.

A dog in the vehicle was also uninjured.

The southbound lane of the highway was closed while firefighters worked to free the woman and the scene was assessed.

A crew from Network Waitaki attended the scene to assess the integrity of the power pole, which was not damaged and the electricity supply was not affected.

An investigation into the cause of the crash is continuing.
