Parking crackdown measures approved

Otago Daily Times - - REGIONS - DAISY HUDSON

A RAFT of measures aimed at cracking down on parking in Frankton have been given the goahead by Queenstown’s council.

At a full Queenstown Lakes District Council meeting yesterday, councillors approved a recommendation to introduce new parking restrictions in the streets near Frankton’s bus hub.

Those streets are Boyes Cres, Wilmot Ave, Douglas St, Robertson St, Lake Ave, Stewart St and Yewlett Cres.

A report to councillors stated the restrictions were aimed at balancing safety measures and the community’s wishes, while maintaining parking provision.

Further changes and issues may be explored in the Frankton master plan, which is expected to go to councillors at the end of July.

Frankton Community Association chairman Glyn Lewers spoke during the public forum section of the meeting.

He said the consultation process with the council had been good, and they could not make everybody happy.

‘‘We’d say approve this, get on with it, and paint some lines.’’

Mayor Jim Boult called the changes ‘‘a good step in the right direction’’.

Cr Craig Ferguson said the council should not lose sight of the safety of children, particularly around crossing roads to get to school.

The recommendation was approved unanimously.
