Otago Daily Times - - WORLD -

GUATEMALA CITY: Guatemala City’s La Aurora international airport suspended operations yesterday due to ash after the Pacaya volcano increased activity.

Pacaya, 48km south of the capital, is spewing ash and gas about 3500m into the air and has produced lowlevel lava flows over the past few months, seismological and volcanic institute Insivumeh said. Winds were blowing the column some 10km to the northnortheast.

It was possible Pacaya would increase its volcanic activity over the ‘‘coming hours or days’’, Insivumeh said.

Guatemalan authorities are already on high alert after the Fuego volcano erupted on June 3, killing at least 110 people.

The summit of Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano erupted yesterday and fissures on its eastern slope sent lava up to 50m high. The volcano is showing no signs of calming down and the most active fissure, Fissure 8, is still pouring into the ocean at Kapoho Bay. — Reuters
