Crews brace for dangerous conditions

-

LOS Angeles: Dangerously dry and windy conditions will challenge crews battling the Glass fire in California’s wine country over the coming days, as officials warn that gusts could push the blaze towards communities in Napa County.

The forecast comes as the 23,000ha blaze remains largely uncontrolled. Officials said yesterday that the fire, burning in Napa and Sonoma counties, was 5% contained — up a little overnight.

The blaze has already destroyed numerous structures, including 107 homes in Napa

County and 36 in Sonoma County, and officials said yesterday it was still threatening more than 26,000 other structures.

Statewide, more than 8100 wildfires have ignited this year and together have burned close to 1.6 million hectares, according to Cal Fire. Thirty people have perished and more than 7500 structures have been consumed. —
