Avocados stolen

-

Whangarei: Avocado thieves are putting public health at risk by selling fruit stolen from Northland orchards after it has been sprayed with insecticide, a grower warns.

The avocado grower, who did not want to be identified, said youngsters were raiding her trees, then selling the fruit in town.

However, her real concern was the health danger.

Commercial orchards — for avocados, kiwifruit and other produce — used insecticide sprays to control pest insects.

The spray chemicals had specified withholding periods, typically 14 days but sometimes 28 days or even longer. — Northern Advocate
