Brands cause wool to burn

-

A unique occurrence has been

reported from the north of South Australia . Three hundred sheep were found to be on fire, and it was found that the smoke was rising from brands which were recently made. The fire could not be put out, and the wool had to be sheared off.The sheep owners were mystified for some time, until it was ascertained that the paint from which this lot were branded had come out of a phosphate tin. When the sun became warm it affected the phosphate and caused the wool to burn.
