PSG, Man United suffer shock defeats

-

BERLIN: RB Leipzig has beaten nineman Paris SaintGermain 21 in the Champions League to earn a measure of revenge for last season’s semifinal loss, while Istanbul Basaksehir earned its first group stage victory, 21 over Manchester United.

Angel Di Maria put PSG ahead, but missed a penalty and had a goal ruled out for offside soon after as the guest team initially dominated in Leipzig yesterday.

But Christopher Nkunku levelled against his former club and Emil Forsberg won it from the spot to take Leipzig level on six points with United at the top of Group H. PSG is third, three behind.

The Ligue 1 champions had Idrissa Gueye and Presnel Kimpembe sent off for second bookable offences.

United was a shock loser in Istanbul, where Demba Ba opened the scoring before Edin Visca made it 20. Basaksehir held on despite Anthony Martial cutting the deficit.

Barcelona beat Dynamo Kiev 21 and Juventus hammered Ferencvaros 41 as the giants control Group G. Sevilla came from behind to beat Krasnodar 32 with 10 men and Chelsea prevailed 30 over Rennes, with the Spanish and English sides leading Group E on seven points.

Borussia Dortmund tops Group F after strolling 30 at Club Brugge after Lazio was held 11 at Zenit St Petersburg.

Di Maria’s cool finish was as good as it got for PSG in Leipzig. Peter Gulacsi then saved his spotkick following Dayot Upamecano’s hand ball, and the forward was just offside when he netted from Moise Kean’s pass.

Nkunku’s drilled effort levelled things up, and Leipzig completed the comeback when Forsberg converted after Kimpembe handled.

The latter received his marching orders for fouling

Yussuf Poulsen after Gueye met the same fate.

United lost its first match of the tournament with a terrible performance in Turkey. Ba was in acres of space to slot past Dean Henderson, and Visca then hammered home.

‘‘It was a tough game, a game that we won. It was important to win for us but also for our confidence and for the rest of the competition,’’ Ba said.

United controlled possession after Martial’s goal ended the first half and nearly snatched a point when Alexandru Epureanu cleared off the line at the death.

Basaksehir held on for a famous victory but stays bottom, while Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side is first on goal difference.

‘‘You don’t just turn up and get three points in the Champions League,’’ Solskjaer said.

‘‘We weren’t good enough — that’s it.’’

Match day 4, with reverse fixtures from this round, takes place on November 2425. — DPA
