Otago Daily Times, Saturday, November 21, 2020 — Page 43 TO LET TO LET TO LET TO LET TO LET TO LET TO LET TO LET RELIGIOUS NOTICES RELIGIOUS NOTICES RELIGIOUS NOTICES HOPE 10 a.m. Worship People often say “hold on to hope” at a time of crisis. We are more likely to feel "hopeless" unless there is a firm basis for that hope. For example, we now have scientific progress on a vaccine for Covid-19 and for the first time are able to hope that lockdowns and disruptions may soon be at an end. The Apostle Paul talked of the "hope of the Gospel’ (Col.1:23). The Lord has told us to ‘prove all things’ (1 Thes.5:21) and his expectation is that we base our hope on solid facts. So what are the facts that form the solid basis of the hope of the Gospel? Firstly we look to the historical record of the scriptures. Archaeologists continually unearth artifacts of the past, every one confirming the veracity of the Bible. For example, Biblical cities once thought to be myth have now been unearthed and excavated, Sodom and Gomorrah, Babylon and Ninevah to name a few. Next, we look to prophecy. Detailed and unlikely events predicted in the pages of scripture have come about exactly as stated. For example, it was predicted that the Jews would be thrown out of their land, that they would be scattered among the nations (Jer.9:16), that they would retain their identity as a separate people, and that they would return to the land of Israel (Ez.37:21) where they would make it ‘blossom like the rose’ (Is.35:1). Over a 2,000 year period, every one of these prophecies has come to pass. So what is the hope of the Gospel? Jesus Christ will return to this Earth and take up his position as king and he has offered us a place in his kingdom. Our task is to be ready. 113D York Place, City Centre 115A Carroll Street, Dunedin Central 2/360 Moray Place, City Centre 3/63 Queen Street, North Dunedin Sunday, November 22 Kirkin’ o’ the Tartan Bring your tartan for the Blessing.
