Phone scam claims Covid refund due from by IRD

-

POLICE in the Southern district are warning of a phone scam claiming to be from Inland Revenue.

A post on the Southern district police Facebook page said the scam involved a person ringing and saying people were owed money from Inland Revenue because of loss of earnings during Covid19.

They then asked for card details to put the refund into, it said.

‘‘People need to remember that government agencies will never call you to ask for your bank account or credit card details by phone.

‘‘If you receive a call and something doesn’t seem right, double check their details and hang up if you have any doubts.’’

If they claimed to be a bank or organisation, call the number on their official website and check, the post said.

Anyone who believed they were a victim of a crime was encouraged to contact police via 105.
