Waterpolo club on top

Papakura Courier - - IN BUSINESS - ALAN APTED

The Mountfort Park Water Polo Club is the best in the land.

The honour was bestowed on the club by New Zealand Water Polo at its awards night in Auckland on March 18.

The win stunned the club and has made it even more determined to continue the legacy of life members Jane and Terry Logan, the Manurewa wife and husband team.

They started the spade work in 2003, two years before the complex opened.

‘‘This is pretty extraordinary really, given that our club was up against the juggernaut of North Harbour, the other finalist and probably the most successful water polo club in the country when it comes to winning titles. Talk about David and Goliath,’’ president Carol McKenzie-Rex says.

‘‘This really is a boost to the self-esteem of our small, but mighty, water polo club and gen- erally a boost to water polo in South Auckland. We have so much talent in CountiesManukau and we want to see our children and young people have opportunities to shine.’’

The Logans, who were at the awards, were thrilled with the win.

‘‘Naturally we are very happy and excited to think the club has grown from strength to strength now fielding teams at all ages and levels,’’ Jane says.

New Zealand Water Polo says Mountfort Park’s links with the local community is one of the great attributes.
