Gherkin needs a family
It’s been three months and Gherkin the dog is still looking for a family.
The young dog arrived at SPCA Auckland earlier this year with his litter mates, but while they were adopted quickly, Gherkin is still waiting.
Chief executive Andrea Midgen says it’s not ideal for a young puppy to grow up in a shelter environment.
‘‘He lacks a little confidence in himself because he has grown up in a shelter and doesn’t know what normal feels like,’’ Midgen says.
Luckily for him, he’s been fostered to a SPCA canine team member where he’s settled in well and learned about the world of a home environment.
However, the sociable and easygoing dog needs his own family, Midgen says.
Gherkin would suit most families, including homes with dogs, children, and confident cats, as well as first-time dog owners as he has a chilled out nature and can learn things quickly.
SPCA Auckland is experiencing a busy rush of dogs, with a mix of puppies and adult dogs needing adoption.
Midgen says adult dogs often seem to get overlooked but can be a better match for families than a young puppy.
