South Auckland police have solved a sphinx-like riddle and tracked down the owner of three stolen statues. It includes two Egyptian-themed ornaments and one of a little girl holding a basket of flowers. The heavy stone sculptures were found on a resident’s front lawn in Hill Crescent, Papakura last month. Sergeant Anthony Curtain says the statues are very heavy and ‘‘not the sort of thing one person could pick up by themselves’’. Police posted images of the ornaments on social media and soon tracked down the owner. They belonged to an elderly Papatoetoe lady. A family friend saw the post on Facebook and recognised them belonging to her.
