Otahuhu’s premier women’s and men’s soft­ball teams scored big wins in their sea­son open­ers on Satur­day. The women needed just four in­nings to thrash reign­ing Auck­land and New Zealand cham­pi­ons Western Mag­pies 11-1 at Star­ling Park, Ranui while the men thrashed Eden Roskill 7-0 at War Memo­rial Park, Mt Roskill. Pitcher Sa­man­tha Parks was strong on the mound giv­ing up two hits and two walks whilst Nita Hickey and Krysta Hoani were im­pres­sive with the bat. BOWLS John Clark (skip), Gerald Reive and Shirley Reive (Pa­p­a­toe­toe Hunters’ Cor­ner) won the Ho­mai Bowl­ing Club’s sea­son open­ing triples tour­na­ment last Satur­day. They fin­ished with 20 ends and 48 points to win on a count­back from Norm Earn­shaw (skip), Ken O’Brien and Larry Cor­ner (Ma­nurewa Cos­mopoli­tan) and Leon Wend­zlick (skip), Lloyd Allen and Ivan Frisken (East Ta­maki) after all three teams had two wins and a draw. O’Brien’s team fin­ished with 19 ends and 39 points. Wend­zlick’s team had 17 ends and 40 points. The next open triples tour­na­ment at Ho­mai is on Oc­to­ber 19.
