Otahuhu’s premier women’s and men’s softball teams scored big wins in their season openers on Saturday. The women needed just four innings to thrash reigning Auckland and New Zealand champions Western Magpies 11-1 at Starling Park, Ranui while the men thrashed Eden Roskill 7-0 at War Memorial Park, Mt Roskill. Pitcher Samantha Parks was strong on the mound giving up two hits and two walks whilst Nita Hickey and Krysta Hoani were impressive with the bat. BOWLS John Clark (skip), Gerald Reive and Shirley Reive (Papatoetoe Hunters’ Corner) won the Homai Bowling Club’s season opening triples tournament last Saturday. They finished with 20 ends and 48 points to win on a countback from Norm Earnshaw (skip), Ken O’Brien and Larry Corner (Manurewa Cosmopolitan) and Leon Wendzlick (skip), Lloyd Allen and Ivan Frisken (East Tamaki) after all three teams had two wins and a draw. O’Brien’s team finished with 19 ends and 39 points. Wendzlick’s team had 17 ends and 40 points. The next open triples tournament at Homai is on October 19.
