CENTURY OF CROQUET
Papakura Croquet Club holds its centenary celebration this Saturday, November 11. Guests are invited for afternoon tea at Elizabeth Campbell Hall at 2pm and play a game an hour earlier. A centennial trophy will be unveiled to commemorate the special birthday, following the cutting of a cake. President of Croquet NZ Annie Henry, MP Judith Collins, councillor Daniel Newman, Papakura Local Board chair Brent Catchpole, as well as four descendants of charter members are attending. A booklet detailing the club’s history, which PapakuraMuseum curator Dr Michelle Smith and researcher Kara Oosterman spent six months on, is showcased. The club held its inaugural meeting on November 8, 1917, in Old Wairoa Road, moving to new premises on Chapel Street in 1937 where it has been since.
