Pon­sonby prom­e­nade

One of Auck­land’s most pop­u­lar cen­tral ‘burbs is get­ting a bit of a makeover. Pon­sonby is un­der­go­ing a se­ries of pedes­trian-friendly im­prove­ments to make Pon­sonby Road and eight side streets safer and more ap­peal­ing to peo­ple on foot. Pippa Coom, Waitem­ataˉ Lo­cal Board chair­woman, says it will cre­ate “a con­tin­u­ous walk­ing ex­pe­ri­ence” that pri­ori­tises peo­ple over cars. Raised pedes­trian ta­bles will be built across the side streets to slow traf­fic, there will be new pedes­trian cross­ings, wider foot­paths, new street fur­ni­ture, trees and bike racks. The pro­ject is ex­pected to be fin­ished by July. A new paid park­ing zone along Pon­sonby Road will also be cre­ated.
