One of Auckland’s most popular central ‘burbs is getting a bit of a makeover. Ponsonby is undergoing a series of pedestrian-friendly improvements to make Ponsonby Road and eight side streets safer and more appealing to people on foot. Pippa Coom, Waitemataˉ Local Board chairwoman, says it will create “a continuous walking experience” that prioritises people over cars. Raised pedestrian tables will be built across the side streets to slow traffic, there will be new pedestrian crossings, wider footpaths, new street furniture, trees and bike racks. The project is expected to be finished by July. A new paid parking zone along Ponsonby Road will also be created.
