This 80-acre estate has been owned by the Sutton family since 2016, but The Hunting Lodge’s winemaking history dates back to 1969 when it was first commercially cultivated for grape growing by Bill and Ross Spence, under the brand Matua Wines. During the Suttons’ time as owners, they overhauled the vineyard, opened a cellar door and refreshed the cafe. This month, they open a new restaurant focussing on wild meats, seasonal produce – a lot of it from the surrounding area – and wine pairing. The menu has been designed in collaboration with Des Harris who will be working full-time as executive chef in the restaurant – his first in-kitchen gig since leaving Clooney earlier this year. The Hunting Lodge restaurant opens late November, 307 Waikoukou Valley Rd, Kumeu
