In 1968, the Apollo 8 crew – Frank Bor­man, Jim Lovell and Bill An­ders – spent Christ­mas Eve cir­cling the moon. Bor­man later said, "We were told that on Christ­mas Eve we would have the largest au­di­ence that had ever lis­tened to a hu­man voice. And the only in­struc­tion that we got from NASA was to do something ap­pro­pri­ate." So for their live broad­cast from space, the crew read the first 10 chap­ters of Ge­n­e­sis and wished every­one "on the good earth" a Merry Christ­mas.¹
