The world we live in through their eyes

- KATRINA TANIRAU

If 2016 has proved anything, it’s that we live in a world where things are constantly changing.

For Morrinsville College’s head boy and girl, the prospect of venturing out into the big, wide world is both scary and exciting at the same time.

Morrinsville College’s outgoing head boy Joel Burr can’t wait to see what awaits him when he finishes school after embracing his role this year and in his own words ‘‘growing into it’’.

‘‘I’ve really enjoyed this year and my role. Actually getting voted in and chosen as head boy was very humbling. It makes you learn to appreciate the smaller things in life and the faith people have in you.’’

He credited the support of principal John Inger, teachers, students and his student council members for helping him this year.

A passionate football fan, Joel plans to go to Waikato University next year where he will work towards a double major degree in Human Resource Management and Psychology.

‘‘I kinda realised that I wouldn’t be a famous footballer, so I’m going to dip my toe in the water and see where that takes me,’’ he laughs.

‘‘I’m still finding my place in the world and I’m completely OK with that,’’ he said.

Outgoing head girl, Jessie Dalin (18), said when first approached about being head girl at the beginning of the year, she wasn’t 100 per cent sure.

Her own expectations made her doubt whether she would be able to handle the pressure.

‘‘I’ve had my moments, lots of them, but I’m lucky to have the support of so many people who believe in me,’’ she said.

Jessie had plenty of advice for the college’s new head boy and girl who will be announced at the beginning of next year.

The one thing she wanted to emphasise was that it’s OK to ask for help.

‘‘You’ll really need to toughen up and believe in yourself, there are going to be times when you question your decisions, but don’t do that too much, you have to own the decisions you make,’’ she said.

‘‘You have to be a good listener and communication and team work are key.’’

Jessie is moving to Auckland where she will begin a Bachelor of Health Science. Ultimately she wants to be a doctor.

‘‘For me, it’s about wanting to make a difference, in everything I do if I can make a difference I’ll be happy.’’
