FROM THE NEWS DESK
As we went to print, NZ First leader Winston Peters and Labour leader Jacinda Ardern were about to meet to discuss a possible coalition agreement. This was hot on the heels of Winston’s phone call to Bill English, to discuss a possible alliance with National. Then there are rumours of a National-Greens coalition, the ‘‘Teal Deal’’. All of this waiting around for Winston must be testing the patients of Kiwis who made the effort to vote, but now wait for Mr Peters to decide who will govern the country. This is reminiscent of post-elections in 1996 (NZ First-National government) and 2005 (NZ FirstLabour government). Surely there must be a better way to elect a government under MMP? Should there not be some clear rules whereby a coalition agreement must be in place by a certain number of days following the election? At the moment there are no rules, no timelines, no guidelines, no independent third party mediator bringing the partners together for talks. It’s simply in the hands of Winston Peters.
