Sport Waikato’s Sports Awards season is now in full swing for the upcoming District Sports Awards, celebrating 2017 sporting excellence, not only in the Matamata-Piako district but the Waikato region.
Nominations have now closed and judging will be taking place shortly for the District Sports Awards set to be held throughout November.
Most of the districts in the region have their own awards event with category winners going forward to be considered for the prestigious Brian Perry Waikato Regional Sports Awards, held on Thursday February 1 next year.
Matamata-Piako District Coordinator Lou Beer says there is a high calibre of nominees again this year in a number of different categories from a wide variety of sports including Morrinsville Rugby and Sports Club in Club of the year, power lifter Matt Gordon in Sportsperson of the year and Tatiana Kaumoana in Junior Sportsperson of the year.
‘‘It’s been encouraging to see the range of sporting codes represented in the nominations with everything from volleyball to lacrosse, and netball to motor cross,’’ Beer said.
‘‘The depth of sporting talent in our region is very exciting. I am really looking forward to our awards evening and celebrating our district’s success,’’ Beer said.
The Ingham Matamata-Piako District Sports Awards will this year be held at the Tatuanui Hall on State Highway 27 on Thursday November 9 with the awards starting at 6.30pm.
Supper is included in the evening and the night will be hosted by MCs Sarah Ulmer and Cath Cheatley.
Additional tickets are available for purchase online at www.sportwaikato.org.nz/awards or from council offices in Morrinsville, Te Aroha and Matamata. Tickets cost $20 each.
