Popular Snells Beach
Snells Beach is a growing seaside town only 7km from Warkworth. It has a large permanent population which is predicted to increase from 3500, including nearby Algies Bay, to 9200 by 2018. A new $8 million school is to be built on Dawson Rd next year, with an initial roll of about 260, which is expected to rise to 500 over the next 12 years. Anticipating the growth of the popular town, Cabra Developments have begun the earthworks on a residential development called Mahurangi Ridge Estate on Mahurangi East Rd. It will have 82 residential lots. The area, overlooking Kawau Bay, was named after James and Mary Snell who bought the land, then casually known as Long Beach, in 1854. The Cornish couple had immigrated to New Zealand with their six children in 1853 after briefly living in Canada and Australia. Snells Beach has two busy shopping areas, The Warehouse, a library and community centre and community police station next to Goodell Reserve, and boat ramps at the beach. A must visit is the Highfield Garden Reserve, which separates Snells Beach from Algies Bay. It’s home to friendly donkeys and white ducks. The reserve has an amazing lookout across Snells Beach.
