Pretty country farming village
Kaipara Flats is rolling tree-lined sheep and cattle country just north of Warkworth. The tiny village has become popular with lifestyle farmers and families that want to live in a country atmosphere. It has a primary school, which was established in 1878, village hall, a playcentre in an old church, and a sports club with tennis courts. The village is only 14km from Warkworth. Just off Kaipara Flats Rd there’s a small airfield that’s home to the Rodney Aero Club, which offers lessons and scenic flights. Near the beginning of Kaipara Flats Rd there’s Horse Riding Warkworth, run by Heather and Roger Mackenzie, which offers farm horse treks. If travellers keep heading west they will come to State Highway 16 and the Kaipara Harbour. The harbour is the largest inland waterway in the southern hemisphere and a popular shark fishing ground in the days of early settlement. In the 1870s, Kaipara Flats had the largest gumfield in the area with other pockets found on Matakana Rd and at Snells Beach. The Kaipara Flats Community Heritage Society is holding a fundraising dance on March 15, call Vanessa on 422 5242 for tickets. There’s also a monthly market held at the village hall. On April 20 the area will host the Kaipara Flats Trail Ride at the top of Kaipara Flats Rd. Sign in is at 8.45am. For more information phone 425 8535.
