Rodney Times - - YOUR PAPER, YOUR PLACE - - Rhonwyn

Do your due diligence - that’s my recommendation to anyone looking to purchase a house in New Zealand, in particular an older build. My family was keen make to a move - a bit more land for the kids and our dog - and we found a house in Orewa that ticked so many boxes. While I had already moved the family in (in my mind), my slightly more pragmatic husband organised the essential checks. It may be tempting to skip the $500-odd for a thorough building inspection, but better that than be straddled with a leaky home that may cost tens of thousands in the future. It’s already hard to mentally move my family out of the house, but I know it’s the right decision. On that note, if you’re looking to purchase a home in Orewa, or any coastal area, be aware of the tsunami risks and evacuation routes. As our cover story reveals, Orewa tops the list of communities with the largest population exposure in Auckland’s tsunami evacuation areas.
