A Seahawks surprise
The Seahawks netball squad received recognition from some unlikely fans on Friday evening.
The Silverdale squad made national news last week after its club prizegiving left the 12 and 13 year old girls feeling second best to Seahawks rugby teams.
Having since withdrawn the team from the club, the girls have enjoyed an uplifting surprise, receiving 20 Constellation Cup tickets at the Kaipara Netball Association prizegiving, courtesy of MYOB and Netball NZ.
Coach Katie Sylvester said it’s nice to see the girls recognised for their year of hard work.
‘‘As a coach, I’ve always wanted the girls to aim for the top and never give up,’’ she said.
‘‘Being acknowledged in this way is absolutely awesome. Hopefully it gives them the confidence and the proof they need to keep going in what they are good at, and realise they are amazing sportswomen.’’
Sylvester said the team has had an exceptional year, putting their bodies on the line, playing through sickness and injury, and sometimes playing netball five to six nights a week in their various teams and trainings.
Having never been to a live Silver Ferns Game, Sylvesters is ‘‘over the moon’’ with the tickets, and said there are enough to include the whole team and a few hard working parents.
MYOB spokesman Conor Roberts said the company recently came on board to support netball and the Silver Ferns.
‘‘It’s really important we support and value female sport in New Zealand,’’ he said.
‘‘We hope the Seahawks enjoy watching the Silver Ferns take on the Aussies.’’
