A 26-year-old Ro­torua man al­leged to have taken part in the Whakatane gang fu­neral pro­ces­sion riot back in Jan­uary has been charged with firearms of­fences. The man, who can­not be named for le­gal rea­sons, is jointly charged with nine other peo­ple of dis­charg­ing a firearm in the di­rec­tion of seven po­lice of­fi­cers. He is also jointly charged with reck­lessly dis­charg­ing a firearm at mem­bers of a ri­val gang, the Mon­grel Mob, pos­ses­sion of a firearm, par­tic­i­pa­tion in an or­gan­ised crim­i­nal group and par­tic­i­pa­tion in a riot. The charges stem from a shooting that oc­curred in Jan­uary 17 at Whakatane dur­ing the fu­neral pro­ces­sion of Mon­grel Mob mem­ber Tahu Kingi.
