LIFE AMONGST THE STEAM AND HOT POOLS

Rotorua Visitor Guide - - What’s On In -

Rotorua is a place where steam rises from cracks in the pavement, where mud plops and bubbles, hot water springs simmer underwater and geysers gush from rocks. This is the environment in which the people of Tuhourangi / Ngati Wahiao still live today, at Whakarewarewa – The Living Thermal Village, where they have lived for generations, hosting visitors since the early 1800s. Maori who settled in Rotorua set up their villages amongst the geothermal features, using the natural resource to cook food and for bathing. They learnt very early on about the healing powers of geothermal waters and mud.
