FROM THE EDITOR
It is great to see the big, separate settlement claims of Ngati Rangi and Maniapoto drawing closer to a conclusion.
These are big steps in the finalisation of these Treaty of Waitangi claims, and, no doubt, everyone involved will be excited to get this far.
The impacts for the iwi involved and for the wider region can not be underestimated.
Financial redress alone is a significant boost to the economy but the other aspects of the claim will also provide certainty for key sites, restore ownership and hasten projects in a whole number of areas.
Socially, culturally and financially, these settlements should provide a massive positive boost to our region and congratulations to all those who have worked to get this far.
Other iwi are also progressing in this area, including Ngaati Haaua, which discussed the terms of negotiations for its claims at Nga¯ puwaiwaha Marae in Taumarunui recently. They are hoping their members will unite and move forward together.
