Children at Turaki School welcomed their new principal with a powhiri on the first day back to school.

Robyn Brider has taken over from acting principal Erin Simpson.

Coming from a sole role with 24 students at Orautoha School in Ruatiti Valley, Raetihi, Brider considered the change after a suggestion from a Education Review Office advisor.

‘‘The ERO advisor said ‘Robyn you need to take what you do so well here so more kids benefit from it’.

‘‘I thought ‘okay I need to be looking at bigger schools’.’’

The advice resonated with Brider so she started to look further afield until she saw a position advertised in the Education Gazette.

Brider is known for implementing Behaviour Management Strategies to support and help children make changes which includes individual learning plans.

Originally from Raetihi, the new position allows her to visit family. Brider now lives in Taumarunui after moving her family over the school holidays.

When Brider visited the school for one day in Term 3, she knew she had made the right decision.

‘‘I am big on vibes and how you feel in a place.

‘‘I loved the feeling when I came in here and kids were coming up and having a chat.’’

Brider will spend the last term easing into the role.

Her main focus is to build a relationship with children at the school and to look at what the school can do better.

The mid term goal is to work on getting a positive ERO report next year.

Working as a Transformational Leader, she will work closely with staff to help them build positive working relationships with tamariki. Brider said she is excited about her role and looks forward to the challenge of leading a bigger school.

‘‘I look forward to working with the tamariki and doing what’s best for them, that is what is at my heart.

‘‘It’s all about relating to them and listening. They’re the reason we are here.

‘‘I am here to lead our school but to be driven by our school community and by our tamariki.’’

Brider is of Ngati Rangi, Ngati Uenuku & Te Atihaunui apapa rangi.
