FROM THE EDITOR
The issue on today’s front page is an interesting one for Taumarunui.
Should the town’s ratepayers be forking out for a marketing campaign that excludes them?
Visitors are actively encouraged to ‘visit Taupo¯ ’, rather than travel the slightly shorter route, via Taumarunui.
The argument is, of course, that regions are a bit like shopping malls when it comes to tourism. Tourists will be much more likely to visit an area if there is lots of different things to do. They don’t care about regional boundaries.
Taumarunui could definitely use a decent hotel but other than that, it already has all the ingredients of a tourist destination.
You won’t find a more Kiwi town anywhere. It is steeped in Ma¯ ori history and a history of rail and river. Its farming-based economy is still going strong. It is friendly and inexpensive and the food and coffee is great.
A museum in the old railway building will do wonders. A reason to drop by is all anyone needs.
