Koru Care’s new ambassador
Burnham woman Amber Arkell, 26, has found her voice in helping to bring awareness to breast cancer for young women, and now she is the newest ambassador for Christchurch charity Koru Care.
Arkell was diagnosed with breast cancer in December 2015. She started her blog, When Things Went Tits Up, to help educate young women about her journey.
Several weeks ago she agreed to become a volunteer ambassador for Christchurch charity Koru Care.
Koru Care is a charitable trust which provides special experiences for New Zealand children with serious and ongoing medical conditions.
Arkell said she hoped her positive, honest outlook throughout her cancer journey would inspire some of the children she would be working with.
‘‘It was such a privilege to be asked to be their ambassador. What a neat way to be part of something bigger than myself.
‘‘My own cancer journey has been hard... I can’t imagine being 8 or 15 and going through all these hospital visits and treatments when they should be focusing on being a kid,’’ she said.
Koru Care Christchurch president Chris George said Arkell would be a role model for the children. ‘‘We just feel she will be great with the kids... She’d be such an inspiration to them.
‘‘We thought she’d be fantastic for us,’’ George said.
Arkell said she was really excited to begin her work with Koru Care, especially with their upcoming fundraiser event for the organisation’s annual trip to California.
The Koru Care Christchurch Cantabrians Ball will be held next month to raise money to take 24 children with different medical conditions to California for 15 days in October. This trip to the United States has been running for more than 30 years.
‘‘It’s the trip of a lifetime for these young people, especially with all the different medical issues and disadvantages they face... It’s great to see the trip through their eyes,’’ George said.
The event will be held at Whareora House on August 13. There will be live music, a dance floor, an auction and entertainment, with all proceeds going towards the trip.
