Bonking James Bond set to hit the stage

Selwyn and Ashburton Outlook - - OUT & ABOUT - ERIN TASKER

When you’re putting on a show called Bonking James Bond, you’re sure to get bums on seats, and plenty of laughs – at least the Methven Theatre Company hopes so.

They’re doing things a little differently this year, and putting on two plays, called Bonking James Bond, and Snip. They’ll be performed on the same night, and they’re plays rather than the musicals Methven traditionally puts on.

There will still be a musical element however, production manager Patrice Hammond said.

The titles give a pretty good idea that they’re going to be comedic plays. Hammond said Snip is about a man whose wife wants him to have a vasectomy, and he isn’t so keen, so he makes up a character in his head that tries to encourage him to stand up to his wife.

‘‘And Bonking James Bond, that show’s about Betty, whose husband is having an affair and in order to boost her self confidence, she creates a bit of a fantasy affair in her head with James Bond,’’ Hammond said.

Each of the shows has two male, and two female characters, and that’s it. So all up, it’s a cast of eight for this year’s Methven Theatre Company showcase, and those eight people have already been found. Auditions were held at the weekend, call-backs were done on Sunday night, and read throughs started on Tuesday night.

Hammond said all eight are Canterbury locals, and six have been in past Methven Theatre Company shows, including some who were in last year’s western musical comedy, Calamity Dame. For two of the actors though, this will be their first foray into the Methven theatre scene.

‘‘Because it’s such a small cast and the characters are quite specific, it was very easy to cast really.

‘‘We had some great people turn up,’’ Hammond said.

The show will be directed by Christchurch man Scott Campbell, and it will also be his first ever show in Methven.

Hammond said the plays are written by New Zealander April Philips – who also wrote a popular production they performed a few years ago, called Stiff – and they are written to be played on the same night.

Bonking James Bond, and Snip, will hit the stage at the Mt Hutt Memorial Hall from July 26 until July 29.
