Motorists get charged in Ashburton

Selwyn and Ashburton Outlook - - YOUR LOCAL NEWS - ERIN TASKER

Electric vehicle (EV) owners can now recharge their vehicles in Ashburton’s town centre.

EA Networks officially opened their Ashburton fast charger site last week, the second of three they’re establishing around Mid Canterbury. The first was established in Rakaia in March and it’s being well used by EV owners, while a third in Methven is currently in the planning stage.

EA Networks chairman Gary Leech said the company saw the investment as a catalyst for driving uptake of EVs.

‘‘This is necessary infrastructure to allow that market to establish,’’ he said.

EVs are critical to New Zealand’s desire to reduce carbon emissions.

‘‘The transport sector is a significant emitter and EVs are carbon neutral,’’ Leech said.

The fast charger is an ABB product with the latest type two terminal allowing new EVs hitting the market to access power, and it allows users to go from near zero charge, to 80 per cent charge, in 30 minutes.

The charger’s location, in the West St car park off State Highway 1, was chosen in collaboration with the Ashburton District Council due to its proximity to the main highway, Ashburton’s main retail centre and cafes. and for its easy access.

The fast charger is free for a limited time.
