Wacker Neuson boosts firm’s success
The arrival of the first shipment of Wacker Neuson products at Stihl Shop Fosters last month was greeted with the excitement of a company that had just scored a major coup.
With exclusive distribution rights across the South Island for the German manufacturing giant’s range of compact construction equipment, Stihl Shop Fosters was ready to embark on the next phase of a local success story grounded in close family involvement.
General manager Bill Caines was on hand to see the truckload of Wacker Neuson rollers, pumps, vibration plates, rammers, floor saws, and other serious construction must-haves roll in, and says the response so far has been ‘‘huge’’.
‘‘It’s a significant addition to our business and something the Foster family is very proud of. We’ve never been able to offer compactors, excavators or diggers, so now we have that complete range for any project people throw at us,’’ he says.
For the 44-year-old Fosters business, part of the appeal comes from having such a premium brand to work with: Wacker Neuson is a world leader in the development and manufacture of compact construction equipment and a first choice for projects as diverse as road building, landscaping, site preparation and concrete processing.
Wacker Neuson’s decision to distribute through Stihl Shop Fosters, meanwhile, was more nuanced than simply needing a sales outlet.
In recognition that a brand’s success can hinge on after-sales support, the Germany-based conglomerate needed to find a partner on the ground with a track record of getting spare parts to a customer in a hurry, providing skilled servicing of equipment and giving the type of authoritative consultation that comes with a tight management team.
Stihl Shop Fosters was an obvious choice.
Established in 1973 as Fosters Outdoor Power Equipment, the company became a Stihl Shop in 2003 and has today grown to employ 25 people with a range of specialties.
Professional managers work closely with founder Barry Foster, who has a directorship role alongside his wife, Jill, and their two sons, Tim and Darryn. Together they continue the family focus and emphasis on personal relationships that have underpinned the firm’s enduring success.
Bill says major construction operators have been ‘‘crying out for the type of service we offer as a dealership’’.
‘‘We’ve got on-road representatives that can come out and talk the talk, give onsite demonstrations and provide the ongoing support a commercial operator needs,’’ he says.
‘‘We’re transposing the levels of service we’re known for, and that’s why we feel we’re going to be very successful with this.’’
Wacker Neuson has grown its stake in the compact construction equipment market significantly over the past 12 years through a series of mergers and acquisitions that have seen it expand its product range and reach to more than 160 countries.
