Daisy the duck’s Ashburton adventures
If you live in the Ashburton suburb of Allenton, there’s a fairly high chance you’ve met Daisy.
She sits on houses, peers through windows and has a Facebook page dedicated to her many adventures, even though she wouldn’t know the first thing about computers or the internet.
Daisy is a duck, and she’s becoming well-known around the town for her friendly and inquisitive nature. The woman who hand-reared her after finding Daisy and her seven siblings huddled in the middle of the road, their mother dead on the verge, wouldn’t be surprised if she wandered into people’s homes.
Jo Metcalf found them on a Geraldine back-road late last year, collected them up, and the Metcalfs’ home became the ducks’ home. They’d run around inside and climb up their surrogate family’s legs when they were sitting, snuggling up like a cat might do.
‘‘That’s why they aren’t shy about going inside because I would just call them and they would come running.’’
Unfortunately, six didn’t make it, but two survived. They lived happily with the Metcalfs and their two dogs, two cats, two budgies, cockatiel, chinchilla and tank of tropical fish until about February this year, when they just became too big, too messy and too loud – they have quite a honk on them – for a suburban home.
So the Metcalfs set them free at a pond, and it’s now been months since they saw them.
Then, one day Metcalf saw a post on Facebook asking if anyone had lost a pet duck.
The post was from Allenton resident Sarah Lye. Daisy had sat on the Lye’s doorstep and Lye reached out to touch her, thinking that would scare her away, but it didn’t so she stroked her and then to her amazement, Daisy let her pick her up.
Thinking she may have been someone’s pet, Lye took to Facebook to find her owner, and found Metcalf.
Having learnt about Daisy’s background, Lye started a Facebook page, The Adventures of Daisy Duck –World Famous in Ashburton. Within days, she had more than 100 ‘likes’.
‘‘I started it because I want people to know who she is. I thought she was dangerous at first and was trying to get rid of her, and would hate for her to get hurt when all she wants is attention,’’ Lye said.
