Current MP Rino Tirikatene said the National-led government had failed to build the homes needed during its term.
‘‘Now, as immigration numbers rise and more New Zealanders enter the market, we have house prices and rents that are through the roof as demand outstrips supply,’’ Tirikatene said.
He said Labour’s KiwiBuild policy would see 100,000 affordable homes built across the country.
‘‘We’ll also make it easier for wha¯ nau to build on Ma¯ ori-owned land, improve access to home loans, and we’ve also undertaken to put the 2,500 Ma¯ ori on the social housing waiting list into warm, dry homes. Wha¯ nau cannot live and thrive without a home to call their own. Under Labour, home ownership won’t be a dream. It’ll be a reality.’’
