Selwyn and Ashburton Outlook - - YOUR LOCAL NEWS -

I was at an event over the weekend that left me a little perturbed.

Not the event - it was a pleasant enough fundraiser for a local high school. What disturbed me was something that happened at the event.

Part of the evening included an auction, and an older man, obviously experienced in calling such things, did the honours.

During his ‘banter’, he managed to offend at least half of the audience.

His comments included references to women’s underwear and he pointed to particular women in the audience and made leering suggestions about their sexual activities. It was oldfashioned, inappropriate and, quite honestly, gross.

Leaving out the fact that there were high-school students in attendance, and most of those female, this sort of ‘banter’ has no place in 2017.

I’m sure I’m not alone in my seething outrage, and I regret not saying something at the time. Be sure, though, that next time I will. We’re better than this. – Shannon.
