Ashburton’s Relay for Life launches
Months out from Ashburton’s next Relay for Life, team entries are already flooding in.
A launch was held for the 2018 Relay for Life in Ashburton last week, and Mid Canterbury Cancer Society health promoter Mandy Casey said it was a great night, with people heading along keen to get their team registered already.
Ashburton will host a Relay for Life at the Ashburton Showgrounds over the weekend of February 24/25 next year, while Selwyn is also preparing to host a Relay for Life, at Brookside Park, Rolleston, on March 17/18.
Relay for Life is a community fundraising event for the Cancer Society. It brings people together to celebrate with those who have overcome cancer, remember loved ones lost to cancer and fight back against cancer by raising money for the Canterbury-West Coast division of the Cancer Society.
Relays start with a survivors lap before the 20-hour relay walk gets under way. At dusk, a candlelight ceremony to remember loved ones lost to cancer is held, with candle bags decorated in memory of lost loved ones lining the track.
Ashburton last hosted a Relay for Life in 2015, and raised $157,000. Anyone interested in registering a team can contact Ashburton’s Property Brokers and talk to Karen or Courtney.
Karen McRae receives a team registration from Aaron Poulter from Fulton Hogan ahead of next year’s Relay for Life in Ashburton.
