Kirwee’s cell service gets a big boost

Selwyn and Ashburton Outlook - - OUT & ABOUT - ERIN TASKER

The activation of a new mobile cell site has delivered new 4G mobile coverage to Kirwee.

Since the 2011 earthquakes, many towns outside of Christchurch have grown significantly, including Kirwee. According to the Selwyn District Council, Kirwee’s population will grow by 21 per cent within five years.

Until recently though, Kirwee had limited mobile phone coverage. Kirwee community representative and Scenic Hotel IT manager Chris Clayton said mobile coverage was vital for work and play.

‘‘This is about connectivity for the town, being able to make calls within the community, being connected, and for those of us who have businesses in and around Kirwee, being easily contactable by our customers.’’

Spark’s head of South Island Paul Deavoll said the improved mobile network would allow locals and visitors to stay constantly connected.

‘‘This will also enable local residents with poor broadband services to access Spark’s wireless broadband.’’

Spark and Vodafone worked together to deliver the tower which is now live with 3G and 4G.
