Park fitness to get people active
Ashburton’s gyms are joining forces for the good of the community.
They’re starting a free, weekly fitness session in the Ashburton Domain – called Fitness in the Park – which is open to anyone to attend and all about getting the people of Ashburton active.
EA Networks Centre Gym manager Anna Johnson said she’d been in touch with all of the gyms and personal trainers she was aware of in Ashburton, and most had not hesitated to jump on board with the idea. If there was anyone she’d missed out, she wanted to hear from them.
‘‘I don’t want it to be just (the EA Networks Centre Gym), I actually want the whole fitness industry of Ashburton to take ownership,’’ she said.
She said it’s about inspiring people to get active, not trying to get them to join one of the gyms taking part. A similar programme is run successfully in Christchurch’s Hagley Park.
‘‘It’s trying to target people that aren’t involved in something yet, and I think the great thing about it is that we are all of the same mind; we are trying to run businesses successfully, but our main aim is to get people into some sort of fitness,’’ Johnson said.
‘‘When we all sat down together we said we all have the same goal, we really just want to get Ashburton out and about.’’
The first session of Fitness in the Park will be held this Sunday, in the Ashburton Domain barbecue area off Elizabeth Street, by the entrance to the hockey turf. It will start at 9am and run for an hour, and will run weekly in the same place, at the same time.
The EA Networks Centre Gym is running the first session, with Monique Rouxel from Figure Fitness, Anna King from Anna Fit, Katie Collins from Exhale Yoga, and Tracey Tordoff from Torque Fitness having a turn each to start.
If it goes well, it’s hoped it will extend to the end of summer, and if it goes really well, it could even end up being all year round.
‘‘This is all very much about giving people a taste of what is available in Ashburton,’’ Johnson said.
A Facebook page will be set up, which will tell people what’s on offer each Sunday beforehand, and update them if the weather is looking dodgy.
Children are welcome, but they will be the responsibility of their parents, not those putting on the fitness session.
Anna Johnson will take the EA Networks Centre gym’s Fitness in the Park session.
