The New Zealand Heartland XV survived a scare to beat New Zealand Marist 41-39 in their annual rugby encounter in Timaru on Saturday.

Six Mid Canterbury Heartland Championship players featured in the match, with Angus Lindsay and Christian Vainerere turning out for NZ Marist and Jarred Percival, Seta Koroitamana and Eric Duff joined in the Heartland XV by late inclusion Willie McGoon.

Another Mid Canterbury player, Maleli Sau, was initially in the Heartland squad but he was banned from rugby for three matches following a high tackle in Mid Canterbury’s Lochore Cup final win over West Coast in Methven last weekend.

Saturday’s match was the Heartland XV’s only match for 2017, and they did well to win, having to fight back after Marist led by 22 points after halftime.

Vainerere had earlier scored the opening try of the match, while Percival also dotted down for the Heartland XV and added four conversions and a penalty.

The two sides played for the McRae Cup, and it was the sixth win on the trot for the Heartland XV.
