Commonwealth Games gold medal-winning mountain biker Anton Cooper will compete in the Longbeach Coastal Challenge’s 11th running later this month.

Strong fields are again expected for the race, which takes place along the spectacular Mid Canterbury coastline, on November 26.

The race has grown in popularity year after year and attracts participants from all over the country in a range of walking, running and mountain biking events, and for Cooper it’s been an event he’s made sure he’s got to in recent years. He’s only missed one year when it clashed with an international event.

In recognition of Cooper’s achievement and the inspiration he gives young mountain bikers, the committee of the Longbeach Coastal Challenge has introduced two new trophies, one each for girls and boys, for ‘up and coming’ young bikers.

‘‘Anton has always said how much he enjoys seeing young cyclists race alongside elite competitors,’’ event spokesperson Anna Jemmett said.

The Ruralco Longbeach Coastal Challenge is run by volunteers and 100 per cent of the profits are split between Longbeach School and the Hinds and Districts Lions.
