City’s top players hit Ashburton
A round of Christchurch’s premier tennis competition will be played in Ashburton next month.
Mid Canterbury Tennis will host the December 2 round of the city’s premier grade at the Ashburton Trust Tennis Centre.
‘‘It’s their premier grade, so there are players there that are national champions for example, for their age groups, and there are guys that are in the top 20 or 50 in New Zealand,’’ Mid Canterbury Tennis coach Andre van Rooyen said.
‘‘For example Tessa McCann (from Ashburton) is number five in New Zealand in the 16s and under age group, so there is going to be really top New Zealand players here that day.’’
McCann’s women’s premier team is set to play a team featuring another former Mid Canterbury player, Ashleigh Leonard, that day.
Both the premier men’s and ladies grades will be contested.
‘‘The level will be extremely high, and that’s what we want. We want our players to feed off that,’’ van Rooyen said.
‘‘Who knows, maybe next year we can host it again, or a senior tournament that will attract a lot of these players. It’s about getting these players to travel here and have that experience.’’
