– Blum fittings prove the ideal choice for a rural Karaka kitchen

What was the brief for this project?

The client wanted a New Zealand-style home that blended in with the Karaka landscape. The kitchen and the cabinetry, which was all constructed by Carlielle Kitchens, then had to fit in with the feel and the materials used throughout the rest of the interior of the home.

Why was it an exciting house to work on?

It was great to have the opportunity to create a home that is a take on a modern farmhouse and which responds to the typology of the site and the rural wetland views. The kitchen and dining room is contained with a conservatory-type space that is glazed on three sides with full-height timber joinery. The pool then aligns with these areas and runs directly off the house. When working in the kitchen, the owners stand looking down the length of the pool. Creating a kitchen that blended in with the warmth of the interior material palette and became a part of the whole was quite satisfying. The kitchen is quite simple and doesn’t try to create noise.

How long did it take?

The process of designing and documenting the home was carried out over a year. Construction took 14 months.

You used Blum throughout the house, why?

We used Blum for all the drawer slides and cabinet hinges in the kitchen, bathroom vanities, laundry and other built-in cabinetry throughout the home. Blum fittings are very smooth and reliable, giving SGA confidence around the operation, tolerances and longevity of the bamboo plywood cabinetry.

What does the client love most about the finished design?

They love that the home is warm and easy to live in and accommodates their numerous pets. The space has a real connection to the land around it and the quality of the materials and discreet design mean it doesn’t feel pretentious, which is really the key to any farmhouse.

The natural materials used inside the home are designed to blend with the surrounding landscape. The kitchen respects farmhouse qualities, minimal with conscious design details for longevity.
